Faith in the Moments That Matter
Dear Eastern Iowa FCA Family,
There are moments in sports that remind us winning isn’t the most important thing happening on the field.
An injury is never something anyone wants to see during a practice or game. As coaches, our first instinct is to make sure everyone is safe. Recently, during a middle school baseball practice, two players collided while running conditioning at the end of practice. One of the athletes fell hard, hitting his head on the gym floor and began bleeding.
As I hurried over to care for the injured player and keep the other athletes back, something happened that I’ll never forget.
One of our eighth-grade athletes quietly walked over and asked his teammate if he could pray for him.
In the middle of the confusion, he put his arm around the injured athlete, comforted him, and prayed. It wasn’t loud or attention-grabbing. In fact, I’m not sure many people even noticed what was happening. But I did.
As a coach, it filled me with gratitude. As a parent, it gave me hope. And as an FCA Middle School Huddle leader, it reminded me why this ministry matters.
This spring, Fairfield Middle School launched an FCA Huddle where students have been learning about The FOUR and what it means to follow Jesus and be Christ-centered teammates. In that simple, quiet moment, this young man lived out everything we’ve been talking about.
Ministry isn’t always seen in packed huddles or large events. Sometimes it looks like one middle school student kneeling beside an injured teammate and pointing him to Jesus through a simple prayer.
God is moving in the hearts of coaches and athletes every day. If we slow down and pay attention, we’ll begin to notice those quiet moments where faith is being lived out in powerful ways.
